Former fat cat gets slimmer prize

A massive moggy so fat he couldn't get through his cat flap has been honoured with the title of Pet Slimmer of the Year after he shed 5kg.

Mischief, 6, was put on a diet when his owner was told he was so overweight he was endangering his health. He's now slimmed down to an acceptable 6.3kg.

Mischief was joint winner with Max, a black collie-Labrador, who got down from 55kg to 33kg in six months.

Max fought the flab with a strict diet and lots of exercise.

Max's owner, Maggs Gray said he was overweight when she adopted him from an animal shelter and he would just "waddle about".

"He is naturally energetic and just needed the opportunity to exercise," said Ms Gray.

Mischief's owner was over the moon for her healthier, fitter pet: "He couldn't jump onto the bed or even wash himself.

"We now have a tree-climbing cat. I couldn't be happier or prouder."

Special diet

Max and Mischief got in shape by eating special food that kept them healthy but helped them lose the extra kilos.

The winners were each given a year's supply of pet food, 500-worth of pet accessories and 2,000 of holiday vouchers.
