Australian spinner Shane Warne has become the first bowler ever to take 600 Test wickets.

Warne had England's Marcus Trescothick caught behind by Adam Gilchrist for 63 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Only three other bowlers have taken more than 500 Test wickets, including Warne's team-mate Glenn McGrath who took his 500th at Lord's in July.

Warne's wicket came at a crucial time for Australia, as England had taken control of the third Test.

The home side had reached 163-1 when Trescothick was out, after being dropped earlier having scored only 13.

Warne, 35, took 126 Tests to reach the landmark, having taken his first Test wicket in 1991.

He claimed his 600th wicket at Old Trafford, the same ground on which he bowled one of the most famous deliveries in cricket, named by some as the 'ball of the century'.

That came in 1993, when his first ball in an Ashes Test span from well outside batsman Mike Gatting's leg stump to knock the bail from the top of off stump.
