Charlie Simpson's new band Fightstar is up for a Kerrang! award.

The ex-Busted singer and band-mates will battle it out with Nine Black Alps for the title of best British newcomer.

US rock bands Green Day and System of A Down lead the awards race with five nominations each, including best album and best band on the planet.

Eight of the awards will be chosen by the public, and the rest by expert judges. Winners will be announced at a London ceremony on 25 August.

Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, and HIM are also up for best band on the planet.

US rockers dominate

Green Day
And Feeder, Stereophonics, Funeral for a Friend, Placebo and Cradle of Filth are nominated for best British band.

Last year The Darkness won two awards including best live band.

This year few British acts were nominated for the awards, which were instead dominated by US rockers.
