Christmas in Greece

Greece was in the spotlight in the summer, when it hosted the Olympic Games.

Anna explains what happens in Greece at Christmas time.

"Christmas is an extremely special time of the year when millions of people around the world unite to celebrate Jesus's birth.

In Greece, every member of the family plays a part in organising the day.

True meaning

Greek children are told about its true meaning: "to flourish untiy, love and peace amongst people".

Most children are eager to wake up so that they can ring people's bells and sing to them a special song called a kalanda and in return recieve money for their efforts.

Yummy food

The mothers always prepare traditional delicacies such as kourabiedes and melonomakarona which contain honey and nuts.

In Greece, presents are given on New Year's Day as the Greeks associate Christmas more with spirituality than materialism."
