I recycle to win prizes

Joe

Recycling is a great way to help the environment, but some people are still not as eco-friendly as they could be.

At Joe's college a new scheme has been intoduced to encourage everyone to start crushing their cans.

He tells us all about it in this report.

"This year our college has been introduced with a reverse-vending machine.

This is a machine that gives you a token when you recycle a bottle or can.

The tokens are collected and then at the end of the year, the people who have collected the most tokens win a prize.

The prizes vary from mini-fridges for pupils in year 7 to games consoles for pupils in year 10.

How it works

This is how it works. Place a can or bottle into the machine.

It will spin the object and scan for its bar-code.

The object will then either be rejected or it will shoot through a hole, be crunched up and drop into a bin on the inside. If it is rejected, the object will come back out.

UK first

The reverse-vending machine is a great success as it encourages lots of young people to recycle.

Reverse-vending already happens in countries all over Europe and in America. However, this is the first in the UK.

Reverse-vending also saves our school hundreds of pounds because it reduces the amount of waste that needs to be taken away."

Why don't you write us a Press Pack report - and get it published on the site?!

It can be about anything that's happened in your local area - or your views on the news.
