World's smelliest cheese is named

French cheese Vieux Boulogne

Scientists reckon they've found out that the smelliest cheese in the world is the French cheese Vieux Boulogne.

The soft cheese beat 14 other pungent varieties in tests, including one with such a bad pong it's been banned on some public transport.

Researchers at Cranfield University carried out special tests with an 'electronic nose' to sniff out the stinkiest contender.

The winning cheese beat off strong competition from cheddar and parmesan.

'Electronic nose'

The electronic nose is a machine that's got special mechanical sensors that pick up different chemical smells.

The 'nose' is connected to a computer which then looks at the different smells and works out the strongest.

Human sniffers also gave their opinion on the smelly shortlist.

The experiment was organised by Fine Cheeses from France, a group that helps to promote French cheese in the UK.

Cheese shop owner Patricia Michelson said "It's a great cheese to try, as it doesn't have the earthy, farmyardy flavours that some people find overpowering."
