Portsmouth boss Redknapp resigns

Harry Redknapp has quit as Portsmouth boss
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp and his assistant Jim Smith have both resigned from the Premiership club.

Redknapp was reported to have been unhappy since club chairman Milan Mandaric brought in a man called Velimir Zajec as an executive director.

But Redknapp said in a statement that the appointment of Zajec wasn't the reason he decided to quit.

Zajec will now take charge of the club for the game against Bolton, and then until a new manager is appointed.

Redknapp took charge of Portsmouth in March 2002, and helped the club win promotion to the Premiership just over a year later.

They comfortably avoided relegation the next season and have started really well again this year, with Redknapp named manager of the month for November.

Redknapp said: "I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the chairman and his board for their support, to the players who have performed outstandingly and all the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me and the club during my time at Portsmouth FC."
