What is a refugee?

Refugees from Sudan

A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country because it is not safe for them to stay.

The reason why the person has to leave can vary. It could be because of a natural disaster like a flood or a hurricane or because of war.

Refugees from Darfur in the African country of Sudan have left their villages because their villages have been destroyed by fighting.
