Premiership: Rooney at the double

Wayne Rooney scored twice for Manchester United
Two goals from Wayne Rooney earned Manchester United all three points in a 3-1 win at Newcastle United.

Rooney opened the scoring after only seven minutes but Newcastle kept working and Alan Shearer scored a fine equaliser in the second half.

But that scoreline didn't last long as a Ruud van Nistelrooy penalty and Rooney's second gave United victory.

Middlesbrough moved up into the top four in the Premiership after a 2-1 win against West Brom at the Hawthorns.

An own goal and a Boudewijn Zenden strike gave Boro all three points, although Rob Earnshaw earlier levelled.

It was a bad start for new West Brom manager Bryan Robson, returning to one of the clubs he used to play for.

The former England captain played more than 200 games for the Baggies before joining Manchester United.

Robson also has strong links with Middlesbrough, having managed them for seven years.
