Missions to Mars 'a step closer'

Boeing has produced artwork of one possible look for the CEV - by Boeing
Two US companies are talking about the possibility of forming a team to build a spaceship that can take humans to the moon, Mars and maybe even beyond.

Boeing and Northrop Grumman have taken their first steps towards getting people together to help build Nasa's Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV).

The CEV is a craft that will take humans into space, and will be designed to work in different environments.

Plans for the spaceship were announced by President Bush earlier this year.

Although Boeing and Northrop have not yet said they will definitely bid for the project, they have signed an agreement that outlines plans for a team.

Missions plan

The winning team will not only bid to build the CEV but also take part in other projects, like missions to take humans and robots to the Moon, Mars and the rest of the Solar System.

Nasa is expected to announce who wins the contracts in 2005.
