Every four years people in the US vote for the person they want to run their country.
American presidential elections are always held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
But people can't just vote for the person they want to be president.
They have to choose people called electors, who say which candidate they're supporting. This system is known as the Electoral College.
There are 50 states in the US, and the more people that live in a state, the more electors that state gets.
The candidate with the most number of electors voted for wins all the state's electoral college votes.
And the first candidate to win enough states to claim 270 electoral votes becomes the president - one of the most important people in the world!
