How do candidates get people's votes?

It takes months, even years, of really hard work to be elected president.

Candidates try to get people to vote for them by giving speeches, shaking hands, giving interviews and paying for adverts on TV, radio and in newspapers.

They take part in debates where they answer questions about the issues that are important to the people in their country.

The debates are shown on television and millions of people watch.

They are supposed to help voters to decide who to vote for.
