Shia Arabs

This group of muslim Arabs makes up 55-60% of the population of Iraq. Many of them were opposed Saddam's rule.

They are based largely in southern Iraq, around the city of Basra.

Since April 2004 there has been fighting in Iraq involving the supporters of a Shia religious leader called Moqtada Sadr.
