Gun Laws

Last Updated: Friday January 27 2012 11:53 GMT

When and why did gun laws change?

A ban on owning handguns was introduced in 1997. It followed a gun attack on school children in Dunblane, Scotland, the year before.

People thought if handguns were harder to get, there would be less gun-related crime. But pro-shooting groups think this is not the case.

In 2010 the age you could buy or hire a gun was raised from 17 to 18.
