Doctor's tips for sun safety

• Try and stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm (this is when the sun is its strongest).

• Make sure you wear a good, strong sunscreen (at least SPF 15 - preferably higher) to minimise damage to the skin.

• Wearing a high factor sunscreen doesn't stop you tanning - it actually helps you to get a better tan - but it does help to stop you from burning which is not only very painful but also puts you at risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

• People with blond or red hair and fair-coloured skin should be particularly careful as they will burn more easily.

• If you have dark hair and dark skin you CAN still burn - just not as quickly.

• If the sun feels very strong then it's better to cover up by wearing a T-shirt or something.

• If you really want a good tan without damaging your skin then fake tan is the best way.
