Safety in lakes, rivers and pools

A man swimming in the River Thames

• Always make sure that there's an adult nearby and let them know where you are going at all times.

• Make sure you know how deep the water is before you jump or dive in.

• Don't run around near the edge - you could easily slip or trip and fall in.

• If you go on a boat or in a canoe - make sure that you are wearing a life jacket.

• If you can't swim properly and are unsure of the depth of the water - don't go in.

• If you are swimming abroad - check that there are no dangerous creatures living in the water.
