The Queen in the 1950s

The coronation in 1953

The coronation of Queen Elizabeth took place in 1953.

It was only a short time since the British Empire had covered one third of the world.

Leaders from all over the world came to see the young Queen receive her crown.

The ceremony took place in Westminster Abbey.

It was shown on television which was very new at the time. Hardly anyone could afford a TV set.

By the time she was crowned Elizabeth had two children, Charles and Anne.
