Is there a danger of war?

Heavy gunfire in Kashmir
The situation in Kashmir has improved over the last couple of years.

The Indian and Pakistani governments have been talking to each other, and some troops have now left the line of control.

In September 2005 hundreds of prisoners who had been jailed for illegally crossing the line of control were released by both countries.

A bus service has also started running between the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir and the Pakistani-controlled side.

India and Pakistan have twice gone to war over Kashmir - in 1947-8 and in 1965.

In 1971, India and Pakistan fought again over independence in Bangladesh.
