Who are they?

After the war in Afghanistan, the US military took al Qaeda and Taleban suspects to a high-security prison on the island of Cuba.

The inmates are not given the same rights as prisoners-of-war and normal US court rules do not apply.

How did the US military decide who to take?

Prisoners from the Afghan war got taken to Cuba if they fitted any of these three descriptions.

1. They were foreign (not an Afghan).
2. They were trained by Al-Qaeda.
3. They had been in charge of more than 300 fighters.

Why Cuba?

The US government said Afghanistan was not suitable because the facilities there were not good enough.

At the end of 2006, there were about 460 prisoners from around 40 countries.

United Nations human rights investigators have called for the camp's immediate closure.
