  Ex-Westlifer Brian McFadden's new look
Updated 31 July 2004, 11.20

Brian McFadden shot to fame with Westlife - the poppy boy band your mum loves you to love. But he left the band back in March and said he had no plans for a solo career.

Newsround Showbiz has learned Mr McFadden is stepping back into stardom after just five months of being 'Kerry's other-half'.

Ex-Westlifer Brian McFadden's new look has been revealed.

Spotted filming a video for his first solo single, McFadden's ditched the squeaky clean to look a little lean and mean.

How he used to look - Mr Squeaky clean.

The Irish boy-band star was seen shooting a video on a London hillside - looking rugged and rock 'n' roll.

Gone is the clean-shaven, slightly chubby sweet-faced boy next door.

Real to me

His new tune is called 'Real To Me' and will be released on 6 September.

Lost his razors? Bryan 'Gallagher' McFadden
The sound is a bit less boy band and bit more indie rock and Brian uses it to get a few things off his chest about what he didn't like about Westlife life.

He wasn't a fan of the constant travelling which kept him away from his wife and children.

He'll be hoping for great things with his first solo record. He scored 12 number ones with Westlife and could be looking for lucky 13.

Meanwhile, the search to replace him continues. His former band mates are hunting for a lucky lady vocalist to join them for a song on their next album.

Get the latest on NR Showbiz at 9.50 and again at 3.50 on the CBBC channel on Sunday 1 August.

Can Westlife survive without Bryan?
opening quoteWell as Bryan was my fave member of the band I'm gutted. And I don't think they'll be able to continue for long without him - no bands ever survive losing their best one.closing quote
