UK illegal downloaders to be sued
Updated 07 October 2004, 15.49
CD
Music bosses in the UK are going to sue 28 people they say are illegally swapping loads of tunes online.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) is targeting "major uploaders" - which are the people who put thousands of songs on computers for others to take.

The BPI said they don't know who the 28 people are yet, but can track them down from information on their computers.

And they added that even if some of the 28 are kids they won't be let off just because of their age.

Music file-sharers have been blamed for a decline in world-wide CD sales.

It's the first time anyone in the UK will be taken to court for swapping tunes but it's happened before in the US and other countries.

In the US the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has issued more than 5,700 lawsuits.

One of the people they caught was a 12-year-old girl from New York who was downloading TV themes and nursery rhymes.

In the end her mum paid the £1,250 fine after the courts in the US decided not to let the girl even though was a child.
