What kids are listening to in Athens
Updated 29 August 2004, 12.55
Greek pop music is quite different to the UK market
By Neil Doughty
Newsround Online in Athens

For as long as there has been a singles chart in the UK, singers and groups have waited excitedly on Sunday evenings to find out if they are number one.

But that doesn't happen in Greece because there isn't really a singles chart here, with top stars (and record companies) preferring to focus on albums.

The charts that do exist in Greece are split in two, with one for Greek artists and one for international acts too.

Rock

But Greek kids do get excited about some of the same artists as those in the UK.

Zak Ananiadis, who works in the Virgin Megastore in Athens, explained to Newsround that Greek kids are really into rock music.

He said: "Evanescence are really big here, as are bands like Linkin Park, HIM and Avril Lavigne.

"Children in Greece do like Greek music but tend to move onto rock music as they get a bit older."

It's not just rock they like, with funky R&B stars like Jamelia and the Black Eyed Peas also selling well.

TV talent shows have also taken off in a big way in Greece, with Fame Story and Super Idol getting lots of fans. No points for guessing which UK shows they are like.

Fame Story has been the most popular for a while, and the programme makers make the most of their success by releasing little five-track CDs from the show every couple of weeks.

Super Idol!

Now rival show Super Idol is getting more popular and it even has its own Simon Cowell-type judge called Ilias Psinakis. He manages one of the biggest solo stars in Greece, Sakis Rouvas, who finished third in the Eurovision Song Contest earlier in 2004.

Last year's Super Idol show produced a girl band, Hi-5, who Zak described as a bit like the Spice Girls

But the biggest Greek star is Michalis Hatziyannis, whose album is one of the biggest sellers here. To see how his style compares with the type of tunes UK listeners are used to, Newsround picked up a copy of his latest album.

Having since listened to it, it is a bit like Enrique Iglesias - if you like that sort of thing.

And from catching a few music channels on Greek television it seems many of the other Greek pop artists make similar-sounding records.

But there are enough English language songs from the UK and US too to show that kids in Greece do like other styles as well.
