At first he lived with his dad in a caravan park. Later, he was shifted about, living with his granny and other relations.

What was special about Nirvana?
Nirvana's music was well-liked by kids who felt let down or misunderstood. Loads of them saw their troubles reflected in Kurt's lyrics. He became known as the voice of a generation.

When did Nirvana start?
In 1987, although their most famous album Nevermind - featuring the band's "anthem", Smells Like Teen Spirit - didn't come out until 1991.

Courtney and Frances

For most of the band's existence, the line-up was Kurt on vocals and guitar, Krist Novoselic on bass and Dave Grohl (now the frontman with the Foo Fighters) on drums.

What was Kurt's life like?
Well, he achieved massive success as a songwriter and rock icon, but his personal life remained troubled.

He had an intense relationship with Courtney Love (singer with the band Hole, who later became an actress). They met in 1991 and married the following year.

Tribute to Kurt

Their daughter, Frances Bean, was born six months later. Kurt experimented with drugs and was haunted by his difficult childhood.

How did he die?
Kurt had been in a clinic for people with drug problems, but was reported missing. A week later - in April 1994 - a workman called at Kurt's home, and found the singer's body.

It is believed that he had shot himself. He was just 27 years old.
