  Euro music swappers face action
Updated 30 March 2004, 15.52
The music industry wants people to stop downloading
People who swap music illegally in Europe may be taken to court by the music industry.

The International Federation for the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is going to take legal action against 247 of the internet's worst song-swappers.

They're trying to stop them from making loads of songs available for nothing to other people using the internet.

None of the people in trouble are from the UK, but they could face legal action in the future.

In Italy 30 people have had their computers taken away and have been charged with copyright infringement, while in Denmark 120 people have been told to stop downloading and have been ordered to pay a fine.

The IFPI has sent 21 million warning messages in the last year to song swappers, and legal action is the next step in their attempts to stop the downloading.

Illegal music swapping has been blamed for a 7% drop in global record sales in 2002, and the figures from 2003 are expected to be even worse.

In the US around 2,000 downloaders of music have already been sued by the record industry.
