Old band pull 'scam' to get hit
Updated 21 February 2004, 13.22
The Alarm pulled a stunt to get into the charts
An old punk band called The Alarm have scored a chart hit by disguising themselves as a much younger band.

The Alarm, who had hits in the 80s, have gone under the name of The Poppy Fields, and roped in a young band to pretend to sing in their video.

The song's called 45RPM and went into the charts at number 28 on Sunday.

They said it was an experiment to show how much image affects singles sales. "We wanted it to be judged on its own merits," said singer Mike Peters.

A young band from Chester, called The Wayriders, mimed along to the song in the video and it was made to look like they were actually sang on the track.

Mike Peters said he thought people would be prejudiced against them because they're quite old now, and that this hit proves their song sold copies because it was good.

A member of the Wayriders added that they never thought the scam would work.

The Alarm, who are from Wales, had several big hits in the 80s, with songs like 68 Guns.
