Backstage gossip from Kerrang! Awards 2003
Updated 22 August 2003, 14.14
Good Charlotte were among the winners
Rock and metal stars came together for the alternative music night of the year at the Kerrang! Awards 2003.

CBBC Newsround's Leigh Mytton was there to get the goss.

The streets outside London's Royal Lancaster Hotel were packed with teenagers with multi-coloured hair, ragged clothes and black lipstick.

They were there to catch a glimpse of their idols at the Kerrang! Awards.

The Darkness
But CBBC Newsround was inside the venue getting up close with the winners.

Skin-tight outfits

We first bumped into Dick from Electric Six looking cool in a white dinner jacket. He was in a rush and explained he was due at a gig in half an hour.

Double award winners The Darkness arrived in a huge stretch limo. Brothers Justin and Dan were in their trademark skin-tight white outfits.

Bassist Frankie said their style was all about doing things on the spur of the moment.

"The first time Justin did a headstand, it was live on stage," Frankie said.

"The first time Dan wore white trousers with extraordinary flares it was live on stage.

"Everything in music is prepared these days - it's extremely tedious."

'Don't sweat it'

Electric Six
Good Charlotte picked up an award for best single, for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

"We never got invited to parties at high school so this makes up for it," Joel said.

We asked Billy what he'd say to young people who felt left out at school now. "Don't sweat it - you'll be the ones at the Kerrang! Awards," he said.

'Great support from fans'

Fame Academy's Peter and Alex
Grant from Feeder dedicated their award for best British band to their former drummer, Jon Lee, who killed himself last year.

"I'm so pleased that we decided to carry on," he said. "Receiving this award means so much. We've had great support from our fans."

Metallica were the biggest stars of the night. They've been rocking for 20 years and loads of new bands look up to them. They're headlining Leeds and Reading this weekend.

Jack Osbourne

With that we went into the main room to hang out with the bands and celebrities, which included Sum 41, the Murderdolls, Bowling For Soup, A and Alex and Peter from Fame Academy.

We met Jack Osbourne who said he was feeling fine and having a good time with his mates.

He said he'd been hanging out with The Darkness in the VIP room, and he thought the Foo Fighters gig on Wednesday night was "amazing".

The lads from Hundred Reasons were also looking forward to playing Reading and Leeds at the weekend, and were ready to party.

Then it was time to go home.

Although the young fans were still lining the streets outside and a few were rewarded for their patience with autographs and photos of their rock idols.
