Radio 1 loses listeners - but more kids tune in!
Updated 31 July 2003, 15.50
Ratings have fallen for Radio 1 - but more 15 to 24-year-olds are tuning in!
The number of people listening to BBC Radio 1 has fallen to the lowest level in the station's history.

But the good news is while older listeners have been switching off, more young people have been tuning in.

Radio 1 is really pleased the percentage of 15 to 24-year-old listeners has gone up from 22.1% to 22.8% because that's the age group it wants to appeal to.

Ratings for Sara's breakfast show have plummeted

But the overall picture is pretty gloomy.

The total number of listeners dropped by 656,000 - taking numbers below 10 million for the first time.

Sara Cox's breakfast show has lost 430,000 listeners, with around 5.4 million people tuning in these days.

Funky new shows

There was also a fall in the number listening to the Top 40 countdown with Radio 1 newcomer, Wes Butters.

A Radio 1 spokesman told CBBC Newsround's website the drop in listeners was affected by all the new digital radio stations which have been springing up.

Lots of people have turned their backs on Radio 1 for funky new shows on Smash Hits radio, Kerrang! and other stations.
