S Club Jon says Les Mis role 'will be tough'
Updated 27 July 2003, 12.47

Jon Lee
Former S Club star Jon Lee has fessed up that his new part in a West End musical will "stretch" him - because he barely had to sing during his chart career.

Despite being in S Club for four years, the 21-year-old did not once sing a lead vocal on the band's songs.

But now everyone will get to hear his voice when he stars as Marius in hit musical Les Miserables.

Jon said: "I'm doing eight shows a week for almost a year and it is going to be tough, there's no doubt about it. It's going to stretch me.

"We'd only ever sing live when we were doing the concerts - we were miming the whole time when we were on TV and whatever. With this I get to sing live every night."

Bandmates to support him

Jon said he took the occasional lead vocal during concerts but to most people he was "just the blond boy in the back doing the backflips".

Some of the former S Clubbers are expected to attend his opening night at the Palace Theatre in London on Monday.

Newsround will be there to see how he gets on and will bring you a special report on Tuesday!
