Radio 1 defends not playing enough UK tunes
Updated 08 July 2003, 08.29

Radio 1 has stood up for the music it plays after the boss of a big record label said they needed to play more tunes made by UK artists.

The chairman of Telstar, who sell records by Mis-teeq and Craig David, said the station plays half as many UK tunes as it did five years ago.

A Radio 1 spokesman said it already played a lot of UK music.

They added they play the best music wherever it comes from and said if record companies wanted more UK music played, they needed to make better tunes.

The radio station says they make sure more than three in every 10 records they play are from the UK.

But an important music magazine said only 32 of the 100 most played tunes on Radio 1 in the first six months of 2003 were from the UK.

Commercial radio stations played 48 UK songs out of the 100.
