Row over which singles chart is best
Updated 29 April 2003, 11.53
Busted are number one at the moment
A row has started between three charts that all claim to be the most accurate way to work the Uk's fave single.

The Official UK Top 40, used by Radio One, is worked out purely by the number of singles sold in shops.

Now there are two other charts, and they use different ways to pick which songs are best.

  • The Hit 40 UK chart - top three songs sorted on sales, all the others are half sales and half radio airplay
  • Smash Hits chart - a mixture of sales, radio airplay and viewer votes and requests on music television

Fans of the official chart say that the others can be tricked to make certain songs higher in the charts than they should be.

But the people behind the new charts say that their methods are much more accurate.

They reckon that falling singles sales - from 89m in 1979 to 60m a year now - mean the way they figure out the chart is the best measure of the biggest hits.
