  Rock guitarist sets noisy record
Updated 05 June 2003, 15.46

A top rock guitarist has set a new world record for playing the largest number of effect pedals ever.

Ace, who used to play for 90s group Skunk Anansie, made the official Guinness Book of Records attempt on Brighton seafront on Wednesday.

What's an effect pedal?

Effect pedals are linked up to an electric guitar.

When musicians press down on them with their foot, they change the sound coming out of the instrument.

Usually guitarists use a few pedals, but Ace managed to use 85 before the sound started to sound rubbish.

He got the help of loads of students from the Brighton Institute of Modern Music to make the record.

They pressed down on the extra pedals while Ace played Deep Purple's song, Smoke on the Water.

He'd wanted to play each note with 100 effect pedals, but he had to stop after it sounded really bad.

The director of the Institute said the "horrendous" noise was like Concorde taking off.

But the organisers say it's still a world record.

A video will now be sent to the Guinness Book of Records so they can verify it is a record.
