Official downloaded singles chart on the way
Updated 09 April 2003, 20.29
Get ready for a top downloads chart
A brand new singles chart could be in place by Christmas this year, based on the songs people download from the internet.

The Official UK Charts Company - who put together the chart for Radio One - want it up and running in time for the race for the Christmas number one.

Eventually downloaded tunes could even be added to the sales in shops that make up the official singles and albums charts.

But only singles downloaded from official sites will be counted - not tracks taken from file-sharing programmes like Morpheus and Kazaa.

Record industry bosses are really annoyed about people who download songs unofficially, because they reckon it's costing them loads of money.

They argue that if people can download a song for nothing they won't pay for it at all, meaning the record company won't be able to make any money.

Others reckon that downloading music is the future, and until record companies get behind it, the problems of people stealing music won't get any better.
