  Eurovision faces money crisis
Updated 30 January 2003, 17.46
Last year's Latvian winner, Marija Naumova
The Eurovision Song contest may be cancelled this year because of a lack of cash.

The competition, which is a big hit across Europe every year, should be taking place in the Latvian capital Riga, on 24 May.

Money problems

But because of money problems, the city has said it can't spare the 700,000 it had promised to the contest.

Last year Pop Idol reject Jessica Garlick sang in the contest, which is famous for its cheesy songs.

Latvia won last year, with Marija Naumova's song I Wanna, which means they have to host, and pay for, this year's show.

Juergen Meier-Beer, one of the organisers, said problems were normal, and were always solved at the last minute.
