Girls Aloud's Cheryl upset by racist claims
Updated 13 January 2003, 14.38
Cheryl Tweedy
Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Tweedy says she didn't make racist remarks to a girl during a nightclub fight.

The 19-year-old was arrested after an alleged assault on a toilet attendant in a club on 11 January.

Sophie Amogbokpa said Cheryl screamed racist abuse at her, then punched her in the face, giving her a badly swollen eye.

'Self-defence'

Girls Aloud are at number one
But a spokesman for the group's record company Polydor, said: "She is not racist in any way and was very upset by the suggestion that she is."

And they said Cheryl was only defending herself during the fight.

Surrey Police released Cheryl without charge after 10 hours.

Polydor are thinking about taking legal action because they say the racism claims are false.

Cheryl had been out with the rest of the band when the fight happened.

Girls Aloud are currently number one with Sound of the Underground.
