Updated 22 December 2002, 19.00
Girls Aloud celebrate being No1
Girls Aloud have made it to Christmas number one with Sound of the Underground.

It's not exactly a surprise for the girl band created by wannabe show Popstars: The Rivals.

Fact File
What they sold
Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground: 213,000 copies
One True Voice - Sacred Trust: 147,000
Hear'Say - Pure and Simple: more than half a million
Will Young - Evergreen: 1.1 million

They beat their TV rivals One True Voice into second place.

The chart race has been dogged by controversy but the girls are thrilled.

All worth it

"We can't stop screaming. This is the perfect Christmas present," said Nicola.

One True Voice made do with second place
And Cheryl added: "This is more than we ever expected. It's been an exhausting few weeks but it has all been worth it."

The boys weren't quite so upbeat: Jamie said: "We're upset but we'll be back."

Cheeky girls have last laugh

They'll all start work on albums in the New Year.

Meanwhile, Romanian duo The Cheeky Girls are at number three, making it a Popstars: The Rivals top three.

They were laughed out of the show's auditions but landed a record deal anyway.
