His nearest rival was new entry Missy Elliott who came in at number five with 4 My People.

Will slips

Meanwhile Pop Idol winner and Gareth's matey rival Will Young was leapfrogged by last week's number three, Shaggy and Ali G with Julie.

Darius: dropped?

Gareth's version of Unchained Melody has made him the youngest British male solo singer to top the UK singles chart.

It didn't beat Will's record for the fastest-selling single in chart history though.

But not all the Pop Idols are having such luck.

There are rumours that Pop Idol finalist Darius Danesh has been dropped by record label BMG, the same ones who look after Will and Gareth, says the News of the World.

The newspaper was told by an insider: "The feeling is he's not going to be able to do what Gareth Gates and Will Young did."
