Updated 15 January 2002, 18.11
Cats the musical
One of the longest-running musicals in the world is to close.

Cats has been playing in London's West End for 21 years and has been hugely popular.

It was created by the writer Andrew Lloyd Webber, one of the most successful musical writers ever.

Poetry-based

It's based on poems by TS Eliot from his Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats.

The cast all dress as cats and the occasional dog for the singing/dancing extravaganza.

There was even a hit single from the show called Memory.

The show opened way back in 1981 and will close on its 21st birthday, 11 May 2002.

Theatre shows aren't doing quite so well right now - tourists worried about foot and mouth or flying have been staying away.

The roller-skating spectacular Starlight Express recently closed after 18 years.
