Robbie's rival red-faced after singing session
Updated 22 December 2001, 15.08
Robbie and Nicole in the Somethin' Stupid video
Robbie William's biggest rival in the race for the Christmas number one has been left embarassed after he resorted to new tactics to beat the star.

Gordon Haskell sang outside the big HMV music store in London's Oxford Street for money but he only raised 84p!

And last-minute Christmas shoppers just looked confused as the grey-haired singer sang How Wonderful You Are to them.

Quit while you're ahead

Haskell, who wrote his song in a supermarket, said he hoped the stunt would boost his sales and give him a better chance in Sunday's all-important festive chart.

Wearing jeans and an old overcoat he joked: "Maybe I should quit while I'm ahead. Still, it's enough for a cup of tea!"

But he's only a few thousand record sales behind Robbie and Nicole so it'll be a close thing!

Robbie and Nicole are far and away your favourites in our Christmas number one vote. Click on the link to the right of the page and get voting!
