  EastEnders causes child helpline rush
Updated 03 October 2001, 20.23
Zoe and Kat from Eastenders
A tragic storyline in EastEnders has prompted hundreds of children to call a charity helpline.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children's helpline has seen a 60 per cent increase in calls since the incest plot was revealed.

In the soap, Kat Slater admitted to her younger 'sister' Zoe that she was actually her mother.

Delicate

Kat later revealed Zoe's father was her uncle.

The NSPCC, which advised EastEnders' scriptwriters over the storyline, said the calls showed how important it was for children to have someone to turn to for help.

Michelle Ryan, who plays Zoe in the soap, said: "It's been a real honour to be involved in it. It's a very delicate and dramatic and serious storyline that needs to be done with the utmost care - and I think it's been dealt with that way."
