Milosevic supporters protest in Belgrade, Yugoslavia Why is Milosevic on trial?
It's claimed Milosevic was responsible for the deaths of nearly a quarter of a million people living in Yugoslavia.

He is charged with:

  • 66 counts of crimes against humanity
  • not obeying the rules of war
  • "genocide" - attempting to wipe out a racial or religious group

If he's found guilty, he faces life imprisonment. But Milosevic has refused to recognise the trial, and has even refused to have a lawyer representing him.

It's one of the most important, complicated, political trials in recent history. It's being held at The Hague in Holland and could last for up to two years.
