Facts about Liberia

Charles Taylor How the fighting started
For more than 20 years, this West African country has been involved in a civil war.

The latest fighting started in January 1999 when Charles Taylor was running the country. He was accused of making money from the fighting in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

He also upset other politicians and whole ethnic groups within Liberia.

This led to rebel armies rising up against his government.
