Children in Ethiopia Ethiopia: 2002
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has warned that his country faces a terrible famine.

He thinks it will be worse than the famine of 1984 which killed nearly one million people and started a big charity effort across the world.

He told the BBC that six million people already needed food aid and the number facing starvation could rise to 15 million in early 2003 if other countries didn't help out.

Why here?

Ethiopia doesn't get much rain and can't save enough water during rainy seasons for when there's a drought.

This year, the short rainy season didn't supply enough water to give a good harvest.

Most years, Ethiopia has to get some food aid from other countries as it rarely grows enough to feed all its people.
