MI5's headquarters What is MI5?
MI5 is officially known as the Security Service. It tries to find out what threats there are to Britain from inside the country - like terrorism.

The 'MI' stands for Military Intelligence, and MI5 also works to protect British people overseas, eg people who work in embassies abroad.

It also decides if there are terrorism threats to things like aeroplane flights.

  • MI5 was set up in 1909

  • Its chief is known as K

  • It has about 1,900 people working for it

  • It advertises for jobs like investigative officers and foreign language specialists

  • MI5 is based in Thames House in central London

  • It's part of the Home Office so reports to the Home Secretary
