  Asylum Seekers
Who are they?
Why are they in the news?
Why do they leave home?
How many come to the UK?
How do they get here?
Where do they live?
What if their claim is rejected?
Who's who?

How do they get here?

Around six out of 10 asylum seekers apply to stay in the UK while they are already in the country, perhaps visiting or studying. Others apply as soon as they arrive at the port.

But some asylum seekers come into the UK illegally.

They may pay someone to smuggle them into the country, often in the back of a lorry or on ships.

Some risk their lives by smuggling themselves onto trains in the Channel Tunnel.
