Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP)
Having seen the GameBoy and GameBoy Advance give Nintendo complete control of the handheld market, Sony announced their own portable machine.

It's called the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and is expected in shops in Japan late in 2004. It should be on sale in Europe and US in the early part of 2005.

Key features:

  • Games come on a new piece of kit, called the Universal Media Disc (UMD). They're only 6cm wide, but can hold 1.8GB of data. UMDs can hold music and video as well as games
  • PSPs will have wireless networking, so you can play games against your mates without needing wires to connect them to each other.
  • Can use memory sticks too.
  • Can be used for online gaming.
  • Price not yet known.
