Jump racing Jump Racing
The horses run around a course that has obstacles in the way, called jumps, hurdles or fences.

Jump racing started a long time ago, and perhaps came from a time when men would sometimes challenge each other to a race between two churches.

They would race from steeple to steeple, ands if a fence or hedge got in the way they would jump over it, which became known as steeplechasing - which is a word still used to describe jump racing.
