Book 4 - The Ring Goes East
Meanwhile Frodo and Sam go into the mountains of the Emyn Muil. They are followed by Gollum, but catch him and force him to help them. They reach the gates of Mordor, which are gurded by an army of Orcs.

They decide to get into Mordor through Cirith Ungol, a secret entrance. On their way, they are captured and released by Faramir, Boromir's brother.

Eventually they reach the secret entrance, and Gollum runs away. Shelob, a giant spider, lives there, and she kills Frodo. Sam takes the Ring, but overhears some Orcs saying Frodo is not dead, but poisoned, and they have him. Sam is alone.
