The Silmarillion
The "bible" of Tolkien's world. It describes the creation of Arda (Earth) by Eru (God) and the Ainur (nearly gods). Melkor (a bit like the devil) tries to mess it all up. It's really complicated, but here goes:

The Elves and Dwarves are made before Men, but Dwarves are kept underground for a while. Melkor lies to the Elves and gets them to leave the Ainur (who, just to confuse things, are also called Valar). Eventually the Ainur/Valar decide to deal with Melkor (who's now called Morgoth), and chuck him out of Arda.

But they don't do anything much about his best servant, Sauron, which as fans of LOTR will know, is a bit of a mistake...
