Oscars statues What is the Academy?
The Oscars are organised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, known as 'the Academy'. It's made up of professional people in the film biz.

It was set up in 1927 with just 36 members, but now there's more than 6,000 members.

The members are the ones who vote for the Oscars. Everyone who wins an Oscar is automatically asked to be an Academy member.
