Leia was born of royal blood, but much of her past and family is a mystery until the final episodes of the movie.
Leia was the daughter of Queen Amidala and Anakin Skywalker.
But as Anakin gave in to the dark side and the power of the evil emperor, Leia was separated from her twin Luke when she was young and taken to live with Obi-Wan Kenobi's friend - Bail Organa.
Like her adoptive father, Leia went into politics and took part in diplomatic aid missions.
It was during one of these missions she came across plans for the Death Star - a space station which could destroy an entire planet.
While trying to get the plans to the rebels, her space craft was captured by Darth Vader.
She is rescued by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2. Between them they eventually destroy the Death Star, the emperor and with it, the evil Empire itself.
During their many battles, Princess Leia falls for Han and the two are married.
